Superposition

A quantum state can be a linear combination of basis states, with complex amplitudes.

Back to glossary

Superposition is not “being in two classical states at once”. It’s a statement about state vectors and the outcomes you can predict.

Example

For a single qubit:

ψ=α0+β1.|\psi\rangle = \alpha|0\rangle + \beta|1\rangle.

Only after a measurement do you obtain a classical outcome.
